The government is scheduled to introduce major amendments to the law pertaining to poisons, opium and dangerous drugs.

The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board said that the proposed amendments had been finalized and handed over to the Legal Draftsman’s Department for the purpose of drafting an amendment bill.

The laws at present are the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act.

The laws are being amended to adapt to the new situation that has arisen with regard to drugs in the country and probable future situations that may arise in relation to drugs and new psychotropic substances, Director General of the Board, K. Gamage said.

“Penalties would be increased and law enforcement aspects strengthened. Apart from the four treatment centres we maintain, community-based rehabs are there in certain districts,” Gamage explained.
