Speaker Karu Jayauriya has instructed Secretary General of Parliament to hold an inquiry into an incident where a Parliament engineer had occupied the Speaker’s chair last week.
A written complaint regarding the incident was submitted to the Speaker by United National Party (UNP) MP, Ranjith Aluwihare.
According to Aluwihare, the incident had occurred last Wednesday (November 16) when the Chamber was being cleaned after Parliamentary sessions.
The letter stated that the act was disrespectful to the august assembly. The Parliamentarian had requested the Speaker to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future and that the sanctity of the House is preserved.
“Occupying the Chair of the Speaker is an act which not only disrespects the hallowed institution but also the entire nation,” the letter stated.
Speaking to our sister paper Rivira, the Parliamentarian stated that there was photographic evidence to prove that the engineer had occupied the Speaker’s seat and added that he would provide it as evidence for an investigation into the incident.
