Media spokesman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Minister Dilan Perera said that there was no reason for party members to panic over the new party established by GL Peiris as it was a very small political outfit.
“This party is not a party. We do not consider this as a political party. It is part of a party and more of a half or quarter of a party,” he said.
In a brief interview with Weekend Nation, Perera spoke with regard to the SLFP’s stance concerning the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (Sri Lanka People’s Front).
Q: What is the official SLFP’s stance on the new Party? Will the party be reversing the suspension of Prof. G.L. Peiris from the SLFP?
This party is not a party. We do not consider this as a political party. It is part of a party and more of a half or quarter of a party.
Q. Do you say that the establishment of the new party would not harm the SLFP in any way?
Not at all as I said, it is just a small party.
Q. How sure are you about it?
When registering the party with the Elections Commission, only the name of former Minister Prof. Peiris was given as the office bearer or the Chairman of the said party. As far as the SLFP is concerned, we are not bothered. We know who Prof. Peiris is. One moment he is with the United National Party (UNP) and next with the SLFP and the same cycle repeated back again.
Q. Prof. Peiris had said that the suspension on his SLFP membership should be revoked. He cited that the current President had contested the presidential election as a member of a different alliance and not as a member of the SLFP. Do you think he could draw a parallel to both instances?
We do not know whether even he can be sure where exactly he is and when he has been in a particular party. We have respect for him as an academic but as a politician he is not a practical man. He was an utter failure as the former Minister of External Affairs. It is a well known fact that during his tenure as the Minister of External Affairs, the show was actually run by former MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardena. We do not know why the media seem excited about this as we do not consider this to be a party.
