The newly formed political party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) informed that they already possessed the capacity to achieve a party membership of one million by the beginning of next month.

The SLPP highlighted that the two main parties in the country, the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) had continued to neglect the aspirations of the people.

The party had been formed to fill the void created as a result and in order to fulfill the expectations of all those who had voted for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the last Presidential Election on January 8 last year.   Speaking to the Weekend Nation, General Secretary of the SLPP, Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam further said that the target of possessing a party cadre of one million would be achieved by December 1.

“Rajapaksa has been invited for a discussion with the SLPP,” he noted, adding that Rajapaksa along with members of the Joint Opposition were already part of the new Party.
The SLPP whilst announcing that the party had decided on contesting at the next Local Government election, owing to the constant postponement of the said election, expressed doubt that the Government would go for an election soon.

When queried about what would happen to party members who also held membership in the SLFP such as Chairman of the SLPP, Prof. G.L. Peiris, Kariyawasam added that neither Prof. Peiris nor anyone else in the SLPP was concerned about  the SLFP anymore, which they deemed had already departed from its true origins and people- friendly policies.

He further added that those who at present were regretting the decision of having voted in favour of the good governance regime’s ascendency to power were also the focus of the new party.

According to the SLPP, the incumbent Government had failed in protecting the nation’s security, strengthening the economy and upholding democratic values.

“The Party is open to all and we have no hesitation with regard to standing alongside the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna or the Tamil National Alliance, if they agree with our policies,” Kariyawasam added.
