The total number of Sri Lanka’s motor vehicle registrations in the month of September 2016 has remained largely unchanged recording a marginal decline of 225 units from 41,797 vehicles imported in August 2016 to 41,572 vehicles in the month of September, latest data showed. According to an analysis compiled by JB Securities Plc, motor car registrations in August were 3,059 units, up from 3,009 units the previous month though significantly down from 14,544 units 12 months ago.
Brand new segment registrations recorded 1,879 units in the month up from 1,738 units the previous month but significantly down from the all-time record of 9,427 units 12 months ago. Renault Kwid gained leadership in the small car segment clocking in 857 units dethroning the previous market leader Maruti who registered 525 units (Alto – 340, Celerio – 172 units).
In the third place was Micro Panda recording 101 units followed by Perodua with 82 units and Hyunda Eon 69 units. The small car segment accounted for 1,712 units – a share of 91.1% of All cars in the brand new segment. Nissan relaunched the Datsun brand in India as a small car called Datsun Go – both the Kwid and Go are manufactured in the same factory in Chennai. Datsun Go has only recorded 6 units in September but expect a rapid ramp up in the future. AMW is the agent for Maruti, Renault Kwid and Nissan Datsun Go – amazing positioning. Financing share was 60.7%.
Pre-owned car registrations recorded 1,180 units in September down from 1,271 units the previous month and significantly down from 5,117 units 12 months ago. Premium brand car registrations were 70 units in the month up from 68 units the previous month and down from 112 units 12 months ago while electric cars registrations recorded 29 units in the month down from 51 units the previous month and significantly down from 528 units 12 months ago. Nissan Leaf accounted for 28 units.
SUV registrations recorded 365 units in September down from 460 units the previous month and significantly down from 890 units 12 months ago while Hybrid registrations recorded 1,272 units in September down from 1,391 in August and significantly down from 5,053 units 12 months ago.
Van registrations recorded 127 units in the month down from 186 units in July and significantly down from 1,336 units 12 months ago.
