The Central Environment Authority (CEA) raised concerns regarding the large scale extraction of soil from mountainous areas for the purpose of use in the construction of roads.

President Maithripala Sirisena recently stated that henceforth approval from him would have to be sought in order to engage in such activities.

The Environmental Impact Assessment Unit (EIA) of the Environmental Management and Assessment Division (EMA) of the CEA noted that the matter did not concern sand mining.
Director of the EIA of the EMA of the CEA, Kanthi de Silva said that the situation was one which was taking place on a massive scale. (RLJ)
