Scientists, journalists and social activists opposing the use of agrochemicals, especially pesticides, announced they would be filing a lawsuit in the Supreme Court against leading agrochemical sellers in the country.

Head of the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences of the Rajarata University, Dr. Channa Jayasumana said that they would also file a lawsuit in relation to acts committed by companies selling agrochemicals.

He added that the community of scientists and environmentalists in Europe had met recently in Hague in the Netherlands to gather scientific evidence against agrochemicals.
Scientists and representatives from communities affected by agrochemicals from 18 countries including Sri Lanka had participated and shared research findings and experiences.

The final report, if there is sufficient evidence to believe that agrochemicals were responsible for harm, would be used to take legal action against the Monsanto Company which deals in agrochemicals.

He said that the Chairman of the Padavi Sripura Regional Farmers Organization, Saman Prasanna and the Strategic Enterprise Management Agency were also working in this regard. RLJ
