Curly hair is both loved and hated. It has however remained trendy throughout times, despite the difficulty in managing the ringlets. In the past, there were periods where curly hair was high fashion and served as a mark of social stature. Even today, with the hair trends that come and go curly hair has managed to hold its charm.

The only catch is maintaining those corkscrew tresses when they are difficult to comb and to dye. At times the curls loosen and become wavy. All this could be remedied using herbal ingredients and by adding small changes to your hair maintenance regime.

Maintenance tips
The products you use on your hair are of utmost importance when it comes to maintaining the texture as well as the overall health of the hair. For those with curly hair, it is best to use shampoo and conditioner designed for damaged hair. It is also advisable to use shampoo that is specifically designed for curly hair. This way, hair would not be damaged by the shampoo used and would experience protection against the natural dryness and subsequent damaging of curly hair.  Shampooing for no more than twice a week will avoid frizzyness and loose curls.

It is also important to avoid silicone based shampoo and conditioner. Generally, silicone based ingredients end in ‘one’. One useful tip is to wash the hair with conditioner, without using shampoo. This could be carried out on regular basis and would add the moisture needed by curly hair. However, only a quarter-sized drop of the conditioner should be used. If your hair still feels soft and sticky, this means you are using too much conditioner. After washing hair, gently rub it off with a T-shirt made of light material. A towel can over-dry curly hair.

It is also advisable to limit blow drying and other styling methods that use heat on hair. Limit the use of chemical products as well since they tend to dry out curly hair.

Carbonated water
The low pH level in carbonated water helps clarify curly hair. For this you could use either carbonated water also referred to as sparkling water. If you are using carbonated water, use unflavoured carbonated water. Mix with an equal amount of distilled water. Shampoo your hair and rinse off with plain water. Then, use this diluted carbonated water as the final rinse. Air-dry your hair and repeat few times a week for best results.

Fenugreek seeds
The high level of fenugreek on hair acts as an emulsifying agent, which effectively locks in moisture to give your curls volume and definition. Soak five tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight in water. In the morning, grind them to make a paste of thick consistency. Add three tablespoons of plain yoghurt and one tablespoon of olive oil to the paste. Mix well. Massage the paste well into the scalp and onto hair strands. Let it sit for an hour. Rinse off with warm water and shampoo. Repeat twice a week.

Apple cider vinegar
The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar helps maintain the natural pH in your hair. This in turn results in well defined, shiny curls. Mix an equal amount of apple cider vinegar and water. Shampoo your hair and rinse with water. Then use this solution as rinse. Let it sit for few minutes before washing off with cold water. Repeat once a fortnight for best results.
