Rotract Champion team with BDR Suri Rajan, Jeewa Rajan and Kandy Club president Arulraj Rathnapandian

T.R.R. Rajan Memorial Inter-Rotary and Rotract Cricket Tournament was held at the Asgiriya stadium last Sunday. Some of the top cricketers were seen in action. Rotary Club of Kandy, which is one of the prominent clubs of the circle, organized this tournament for the 14th occasion in memory of its past prominent member T.R.R. Rajan. The tournament was held to commemorate his 14th death anniversary.

T.R.R. as he was known by Rotarians, was a livewire of Kandy Rotary Club. He was a committee member, Director, Treasurer and President of the club and a leading industrialist, whose immense contribution to the Kandy Rotary Club has made it one of the most prestigious Rotary Clubs in the country. Rajan, a product of Trinity College did his higher studies in India. Like his father P.T. Rajan who introduced hockey to Kandy, T.R.R. gave a big hand for the sport and through his school Asoka Vidyalaya he produced several top class hockey players who made the school and country proud. This tournament was sponsored by Sun Match Company.

This tournament produced entertaining cricket. As many as 69 teams were seen in action. In the final, Rotary Club of Anuradhapura were able to score 82 runs for the loss of one wicket in their allocated overs. In reply Nallur Club scored 59 runs for 2 wickets. In the Rotract final Trincomalee Club scored 82 runs for no loss and in reply Chulipuram Club scored 29 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. The Champions and the Runners-up were presented with T.R.R. Rajan Memorial Shields.

The tournament was played under the patronage of Governor of Rotary Senaka Amarasinghe with Jeeva Rajan, wife of late TRR Rajan and former Governor of Rotary BDR Suri Rajan too graced the occasion.

After the tournament B.D.R. ‘Suri’ Rajan, the advisor and the god father of the tournament said, “What a show of cricket. The result isn’t that important. It’s about the overall experience for everyone. I sincerely hope that everyone, players, spectators and the organizers enjoyed the day. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone especially to the organizing committee for a good job well done.”

This tournament is 14 years old and has become an important and hugely fun fixture in the Rotary and Rotract sports calendar. The cricket community hoped for good weather and good cricket and their wishes came true. It was a family-friendly event. This time it was a grand show with Kandy Rotary Club celebrating their 75th year. The tournament reached new heights with players producing explosive bowling, batting and fielding.
Winners of the tournament were (Rotary) – Rotary Club of Anuradhapura, Runners-up – Rotary Club of Nallur. Best bowler Harindra Dilhan (Rotary Club of Panduwasnuwara), Fielder – Chathurka Wickramasinghe (Rotary Club of Panduwasnuwara), Batsman – Sumith Jayasiri (Rotary Club of Anuradhapura), Best all-rounder – Sumith Jayasiri – (Rotary Club of Anuradhapura). The best dressed team award went to Aluwihare club.

Rotaract: Winners – Rotaract Club of Trincomalee, Runners-up – Rotaract Club of Chunnakan, Best bowler – Charith Kumarasinghe (Rotaract Club of University of Colombo – Faculty of M & F), Best Fielder – Inparasa (Rotaract Club of Chulipuram), Batsman and all-rounder S. Richard (Rotaract Club of Trincomalee). The best dressed team award was won by Chunnakan Club.
