DFCC Bank and HNB registered comprehensive wins over their opponents in a men’s A division matches of the Mercantile League Basketball Tournament held at the Edward Henry Pedris and Otter AC courts last weekend.
DFCC routed Nations Trust Bank ‘A’ by 83 points to 58 after leading 33/28 at half time.
Prageeth Pushpakumara and Roshan Fernando (19 points each) were in top form for DFCC.
Manjula Jayaratne and Rukshan Fernando (12 points each) scored for NTB “A”.
HNB too scored an emphatic 53 points to 39 win over Sampath Bank in an intense match. HNB led 23/16 at half time.
Chalinda Fernando (15) and Anushka Jayalath (12) scored for HNB while Mithila Abeysekera (11) scored for the losers.
John Keells edge out Dialog
John Keells group finished on top of their group when they edged out Dialog Axiata, 53/51 in the men’s B division segment of the tournament.
John Keells led 26/25 at half time and maintained the lead through the accurate shooting by T. Dharmasena (17) and L. Lakshan (15).
V. Kumarasinghe scored 22 points for Dialog, but it was in vain.
John Keells will now meet SriLankan Airlines ‘A’ in the first semi–final and Dialog Axiata will take on MAS Holdings ‘Reds’ in the second semi-final.
Kanrich Finance on top
Kanrich Finance finished on top of their group beating HSBC 53/39 in a men’s ‘C’ division.
Kanrich Finance maintained a clear 23/16 points lead at half time. Their main scorers were Charith Perera (16) and M. Rajapaksa (11)
Kanrich Finance will meet HSBC once again in the first semi-final. NDB Bank will take on LB Finance in the second semi-final.
NTB ‘B’ create upset
Nations Trust Bank ‘B’ created an upset when they narrowly beat Seylan Bank 60/57 in a men’s D division encounter. They also managed to hold on to a slender lead 33/28 at half time. Pramod Weerasinghe with 23 points was very accurate with his shooting while Gayan Samaraweera also scored 15 points for NTB.
Gayan Samaraweera (15) did not receive enough support from Seylan players. However, Seylan Bank finished on top of their group and will meet Softlogic Group in the first semi-final.
New comers Union Bank will take on MAS Holdings “Blacks” in the second semi-final.
N. Niroshan with 33 points was in sleek form as Hirdaramani Group beat LOLC 66/60 in another D division game. Both teams failed to qualify for the semis.
Tobacco too strong
Ceylon Tobacco Company were too strong and smoked out Copal Amba 45/23 in a men’s ‘E’ division game.
The winners led 16/8 at half time. C. Malwatte with 26 points was the top scorer.
Sarva in historic win
New comers Sarva Integrated registered their historic first win in the tournament beating UB Finance 39/36.
Sajith Silva (23) was the match winner for Sarva. Shammi Seneviratne (16) and J. Gregory (17) scored for UBF.
