The Government is now keen on the quality of water supply, sanitation and other facilities provided to inmates of prisons which officials say should be improved.
The Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs have noted that the human rights of inmates are an area of focus with regard to reforms in the pipeline.
A special task force set up by the Government will be presenting proposals to the Cabinet in relation to prison reforms which are to be adopted and implemented.
Secretary of the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, V. Sivagnanasothy explained that they would also be focusing on areas such as the present problem of overcrowding in prisons and the shifting of jailhouses from cities to the countryside.
He added that they would also be looking at improving the treatment meted out to prison inmates.
“The knowledge, methodology and approach (how to handle prisoners) of Prisons Department staff and the relevant institutions must be improved. Security aspects too will be looked at,” he added.
