Hameed Al Husseinie College Colombo’s under-19 and under-17 football teams emerged champions at the All-Island National Schools Games held at the Prison grounds in Anuradhapura recently.
Their under-19 team did well to beat the strong challenge offered by Zahira College Colombo before the winning 4-3 in the penalty shootout. The scores were levelled at 1-all at the end of the 90 minutes.
Vice captain Fazil Kareem scored the first goal for Hameed Al Husseinie (HAH) in the tenth minute off a free kick.
Zahira found the equaliser through the boot of Mohamed Hijaz who scored ten minutes later. That was all the scoring done during the rest of the game when the penalty shootout was ordered.
HAH goalkeeper Mahendran Dinesh excelled between the posts and saved two spot kicks that helped them win the final and the gold medal after a lapse of 19 years.
HAH beat Kinniya Central 3-0 in the semi-final and St. Lucia’s College, Mannar 4-0 (penalties) in the quarter-final.
The HAH under-17 team retained the gold medal after defeating De Mazenod College, Kandana by 4 goals to 2 in the penalty shootout after the game ended without scoring at the end of 90 minutes.
This final too was in the National Schools Games played at the Prison ground in Anuradhapura on September 11.
HAH defeated St. Patrick’s College, Jaffna 1-0 in the semi-final and beat St. Joseph’s College, Trincomalee 1-0 in the quarter-final.
