Farmers complained of the reduction in crops due to the drought and suffering incurred as a result of Government curtailment of relief afforded to farmers.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) North Western Provincial Councilor and the National Organizer of the All Ceylon Peasants Federation, Namal Karunaratne said that farmers of vegetables such as radish, kohlrabi, chillies, beetroot and capsicum chillies, all of which require water two times a day, and big onions, arthaapal, corn, cow pea, mung beans, orid cucumber, soya and fruits including water melon and banana, and also coconut were the ones worse affected.
“The cost of production is high owing to the fact that fertilizer and seeds are expensive and the fact that farmers must bring in water from somewhere else,” he noted.
“The cost of vegetables on the other hand has gone down,” he explained. (RJ)
