Ironing, rebonding and straightening hair has become an integral part of life for most women. While some are partial to curly hair, others prefer the neat look and the ease of managing straight hair, compared to curly hair. Straight hair can easily be styled, or it could be left loosely hanging around your face, which saves time. However, all the harmful chemicals and damage done to the hair, caused by straightening, is hardly worth it. Most chemicals used are carcinogenic, in addition to being allergens. The heating and chemical reactions involved in the straightening process dry and damaged hair in the long run. Your hair may be straight, but it would become brittle and sparse.

By using herbal remedies, it is possible to naturally straighten hair, without damaging it in the process. However, it takes time and patience. Also, these remedies should not be tried more than twice a week, in order to avoid hair damage. Also, please note that these methods might not result in stick straight hair.

Celery leaves
Celery contains ingredients that would help straighten hair naturally. Wash celery leaves well with water and chop them. Then, blend with a little water to extract juice. Extract the juice, and put it in a spray bottle. Let it sit for two days. After two days, spray your hair thoroughly with the juice. Use a wide toothed comb to help spread the juice well. Massage in circular motion for a few minutes, pile hair on top of your head and cover with a shower cap. Leave on for 30 minutes, and then wash off thoroughly with a mild shampoo. Repeat once a week.

Castor oil
Castor oil straightens hair, gets rid of frizz and scalp infections. It also conditions hair leaving it amply hydrated. Mix two tablespoons of castor oil with one tablespoon of soybean oil. Pour the oil mixture into a heat durable container, place it in a water bath and heat over fire, until it is slightly warm. Carefully test that it is not warm enough to burn. Then, apply the oil thoroughly onto the hair and scalp and massage for few minutes. Leave on for 30 minutes and wash off thoroughly with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo. Comb hair while it is still wet and allow it to dry.

Coconut milk
Coconut milk adds moisture and straightens hair, simultaneously. Extract fresh coconut milk and mix one cup of coconut milk with freshly – extracted juice from one lemon, in a glass jar. Refrigerate the glass jar for few hours until a creamy layer is formed on the top of the mixture. Extract this cream and apply thoroughly on hair and scalp. Massage well for few minutes and let the mixture sit for 20 minutes. Then, pile hair on top of your head and cover with a shower cap. Leave for 30 minutes and follow with shampoo and conditioner. Comb hair while wet and allow it to air dry. Repeat twice a week for best results.

Milk and strawberries
This remedy results in permanently straight hair, so it is not for those who are fickle about their hair type. Take half a cup of fresh milk and add one tablespoon of honey to it. Then, mash a strawberry and mix it together to obtain a thick syrup-like consistency. Pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle. Then, spray it evenly all over the hair. Wrap the hair up in a towel and let it sit for two hours. Afterwards wash off with shampoo. Repeat twice a week for best results.
