The government is to introduce new legislation to increase taxes for beverages with sugar levels in excess of permitted amounts.

Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Rajitha Senaratne made the announcement when addressing the media following the inauguration ceremony of the 69th Session of the World Health Organisation Conference South-East Asia Region, Regional Committee in Colombo.

According to the Minister, taxes will be implemented in future on excess salt and trans-fats.

“The current government will not depend on revenue generated by Alcohol and Tobacco taxes,” he said.
