As an initiative to promote healthy lifestyle among the general public, the World Health Organisation (WHO) will launch a special exercise programme titled ‘Be the Change’ from September 5 to 9 in Colombo.
The programme would be launched alongside the WHO Regional Committee meeting.
The programme is the first ever in Sri Lanka that would practically demonstrate the necessity to carry out at least 150 minutes of exercises per week in order to maintain health. The programme will take place at the Galle Face Green from 6.30am to 7am.
During the WHO regional committee meeting, issues such as non communicable diseases, accelerating improvements in health in the era of Sustainable Development Goals, anti –microbial resistance, malnutrition and health of migrant populations, WHO recent emergency reforms and emergency response and elimination of diseases from the region would be given key focus.
The committee will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe. Many health experts would take part in the discussions in this year’s committee, including WHO Director General, Dr Margaret Chan,WHO South-East Asia Regional Director, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh. Other WHO experts and senior officials from health ministries of member countries would also be present.
