The People’s Collective Against the Killing of Prisoners, Inmates and Detainees of the Welikada Prison urged United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who visited the country this week, to pressure the Government to mete out justice in relation to the 2012 Prison massacre.
Chairman of the People’s Collective, Attorney-at-Law Senaka Perera said that they had requested that an appointment be granted to them to meet Ki-moon to bring him up to date on the issue pertaining to the killings.
Previously in July, Deputy Inspector General of Police Priyantha Jayakody told Nation when queried that it was up to Minister of Justice President’s Counsel Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, as the appointing authority of the Committee of Inquiry into the Prison Incident 2012 (CIPI) which inquired into the 2012 Welikada Prison murders to publish and release the said Committee’s report.
The Police have thus far not received the said report or any part of it. The delay in informing the relevant authority or authorities at present is with the Ministry of Justice.
Dr. Rajapakshe was not available for a comment.
