The SOS Children’s Village is a well-established non-profit organization and a registered Charitable Organization since 1979. It believes that every child belongs to a family and is committed in ensuring the well-being of children who have lost parental care and are at the risk of losing parental care. SOS CV SL has supported over 41,000 children during the past 35 years of service through the Family-Based Care. They support over 4,500 children island wide through their programmes.

Currently, the SOS Children’s Village in Sri Lanka is being supported by the European countries. However, with the economic development the World Bank has placed Sri Lanka as one of the middle-income countries in the world index and SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka is expected to be self-sufficient by the year 2023. Starting from 2016, 20 per cent of their annual budgets are being siphoned.

In order to meet our goal, the SOS Children’s Village is on an endeavour to create awareness in Sri Lanka about the work that is done during the last 35 years and the plans ahead. Their main objective is to attract as many donors as possible to ensure that SOS children across the country living in the six SOS Children’s Villages are looked after with love, respect and security by its own citizens in the long term.

With this in mind, SOS Children’s Village recently conducted a media tour of the SOS Children’s Village situated in Kesbewa near Piliyandala town. The foundation stone for the Village was laid on April 1, 1981 and in November that year when the construction of the Village was completed partially, the first children brought home. The Village was formally dedicated to children of Sri Lanka on January 20, 1982 by founder father of SOS Children’s Villages Hermann Gmeiner. It was the first Children’s Village in Sri Lanka. The Village was built on the land donated by the government.
