The Sri Lankan contingent takes part in the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics

Sri Lanka’s athletes contesting the Rio Olympic Games turned in dismal performances with only swimmer Mathew Abeysinghe, showing potential for the future despite failing to move beyond the heats.

Abeysinghe clocked 50.96 seconds and finished third in the heats worked out for the freestyle 100 metres event for men.

The worst was shooter Mangala Samarakoon who finished last in a line-up of 50 competitors when he contested the 10m air rifle event.

Weight lifter Sudesh Pieris failed in all three attempts when attempting to clear lifting a weight of 120kgs. He contested In the Men’s 62 kg category.

Judoka Chamara Dharmawardene was eliminated in the pre-quarter final stage in the men’s 73 kg weight class. (RN)
