Health ministry warns that the number of men who have contracted HIV have increased. Director of the National STD/AIDS Control Programme Dr. Sisira Liyanage said that out of the 153 HIV infected cases reported this year, over 100 were males. Compared to last year this is a 25 per cent increase in male infected cases.

Liyanage cited unprotected sex and same sex intercourse as reasons for the increased incidence. Women contract HIV mostly through sexual intercourse with either spouse or male sex partner, said Liyanage.
