Darshana Prasad of the Navy became the proud winner of the ‘SLT Speedup Sawariya’ that ended on July 31, at the Municipal ground in Batticaloa. He was presented the glittering trophy plus a cheque for Rs. 1 million presented by Kumarasinghe Sirisena, Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom.
Prasad finished the gruelling distance in a time of 18 hours, 29 minutes and 53 seconds. Charith Fernando of the Army finished second only by a difference of two seconds while Jeewan Jayasinghe of Air Force finished third in a close finish.
Jayasinghe also succeeded in securing the award for ‘Best Sprinter’ as well. The title ‘King of the Mountain’ went to C.M. Viran from the SL Ports Authority team, while Avishka Madonza was named ‘Best Young Cyclist’. The Air Force, Navy and Army secured the prizes for Best Team respectively, making it a definite day of victory for the three armed forces.
Present at the presentation ceremony with Sirisena, were SLT’s Group CEO DileepaWijesundera and Chief Marketing Officer Ajantha Seneviratne.
There is no doubt that the ‘SLT Speedup Sawariya’ will go down in the history of Sri Lankan sports as the event that brought in a new era for cycling in the country. Organized by Sri Lanka Telecom in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka, the ‘SLT Speedup Sawariya’ came in to existence in order to raise the standards of cycling in Sri Lanka and ensure its future development. The success and popularity received by the campaign are a testament to the fact that the organizers at SLT and the CFSL have achieved all that they set out for and more.
