Major local businesses and individual entities have suffered losses to the tune of USD 2 million (Rs. 292 million) as a result of falling prey to various online frauds and scams from January 2015 to July 2016.
The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) said that it had received 20 complaints during the said period, where companies and individual businesses had lost money as their emails were hacked and their business conversations were monitored.
Senior Information Security Engineer at the SLCERT, Roshan Chandraguptha explained that the majority of the complaints contained a similar pattern of incidents.
“I do not know whether these companies were able to recover at least part of the money. Those affected include big companies as well as starters. The big companies could survive the issue. But to the small time people and starters, the entire businesses had collapsed,” Chandraguptha said.
