The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) called attention to the fact that the recruitment of United National Party (UNP) supporters as consultants to the Southern Transport Development Project of the Road Development Authority (RDA) had been orchestrated by the UNP.

The RDA comes under the purview of the Ministry of Highways and Higher Education of which the Minister is, Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella.

JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that there were 13 to 15 other projects such as the upcountry (uda rata) one.

Out of the 56 political henchmen recruited, there are those who have only passed the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) examination, and also a former local Government body UNP Party leader and Chairman and a local Government body UNP leader of the Opposition and also a monk (Wattappala Seevali of the Hiriyala Purana Viharaya, Kandy Road, Gampola), all of whom are entitled to a monthly allowance of Rs 25,000 and a transport allowance of Rs 40,000, he explained.

Dr. Jayatissa added that he was in possession of the list of names of the 56 and their qualifications for the said post, a list he had said in Parliament that he would table in Parliament.

He was previously quoted as saying that in the list only two individuals had passed GCE Advanced Level.

“In one instance, there are several members of the same family (a father and a son) too who have been appointed as consultants. Kiriella has not said that these people have not been recruited. Now it is being said that the recruited consultants are not receiving Rs 65,000 to the hand but only a part of it. They are also from Kandy. Kiriella tabled a list of 45 names of persons who had been recruited as public relations officers. Except for only four or five persons from outside, everyone else is from Kandy, which is Kiriella’s seat and electorate. The Government or Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will not do anything about this,” he elaborated.
