The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) called on the Financial Crimes Investigation Division to arrest South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) Chairman, Neville Fernando for the preparation of false documents and pulling wool over the eyes of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.
Praising the opposition by the Government Medical Officers’ Association, the Inter-University Students Federation and the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to the said private medical college, the Chairman of the latter, Prof. Carlo Fonseka is also reported to have claimed that he cannot take any responsibility for doctors created by an institution sans standards and has subsequently threatened to resign from his post if a Court order is issued directing the SLMC to register students of the SAITM, JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa explained that the people of the country did not want or trust those passing out of the SAITM.
He added that though the Government’s policy was the commodification of education, due to the opposition to the SAITM, in the last budget, the Government had to concede that medical education would not be privatized.
Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne is carrying on the process of attempting to legitimize SAITM in the same manner as former Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake during the last regime of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he opined, adding that the incumbent Government was engaged in interpreting Court orders as a means to achieving their ends.
“SAITM is illegal. Fernando falsely claimed that the SAITM was affiliated to a Russian State Medical Academy. He further falsely claimed that the SLMC has recognized the SAITM. By way of these false claims, he enrolled students at exorbitant fees. The people will oppose this and therefore the Government should not precipitate a crisis,” he mentioned.
