The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) warned that if Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe failed to exercise due professional care in the discharge of the functions of his office, he, too, would meet the same fate as former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Arjuna Mahendran.

Responding to Wickremesinghe’s recent statement that the United National Party was ready to work with the JVP and other political parties to rebuild the country and take it forward, JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that their party was willing to work with political parties including those of the government and the opposition for the sake of national interest.

Wickremesinghe, however, has thus far acted solely based on personal interest, he added.
The recent appointment of Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy as the CBSL Governor cannot be taken as having solved in entirety the crisis at the CBSL as Mahendran and his son-in-law Arjun Aloysius are yet to be brought to book and the losses to the State incurred as a result of the duo’s action be reclaimed from the duo, he noted.

“It is in the name of national interest that we are presently attempting to get the National Audit Bill passed in the Parliament by intervening. Regarding the Treasury bond scams, Wickremesinghe did not even act on his party’s interest let alone national interest,” he said.

He added that if he had taken the correct decision back in February, 2015 when the first bond scam during Mahendran’s tenure at the helm came to light, the country could have averted the enormous losses incurred from the two bond scams which took place in March this year.

“Even during the final hour, he was not prepared to make the proper call regarding the CBSL Governor’s post,” he remarked.
