The legal and academic community called on divisional secretaries, grama sevaka niladharis, child welfare officers and child development officers to monitor and submit reports with regards to pedophiles including those among Island Reconvicted Criminals.
Calling for a mechanism with a separate unit to be established to tackle the problem of pedophiles including foreign nationals engaging in pedophilia within the country, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Commercial Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo, Attorney-at-Law Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa explained that the said mechanism should have retired Judges of the Supreme Court and journalists too.
Databases must be maintained pertaining to such persons, he added.
Pedophiles have psychiatric problems and therefore treatment including medical treatment, rehabilitation and counseling must be provided to them, he observed.
“The areas where they live, the kind of environments they are surrounded by, their workplaces, their behaviours, for what kinds of crimes are they re-arrested for and all other such aspects concerning pedophiles need to be seriously looked into and constantly monitored,” he pointed out.
