Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka rose by 10% in May to 125,044 visitors compared with the same month last year, official data released last week showed.

Arrivals during the first five months of the year grew 18.4 percent to 846,229 visitors, compared with the same period last year.

China remains Sri Lanka’s fastest growing tourism market with the number of visitors up 31.5% to 16,004 in May 2016 from a year ago, statistics released by Sri Lanka Tourist Development Authority showed.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting the island, including those from Hong Kong, increased by 42.7% to 112,890 in the five months to May 2016 compared to the same period last year, recording the fastest growth of all tourism markets.

During the first five months, 273,000 visitors from Western Europe and a further 78,000 from Eastern Europe made Europe the leading source of tourists by region.
South Asia accounted for 205,000 tourists, and East Asia, 176,000 tourists.
