In a bid to address the garbage disposal issue in the country, the Government is to establish the much awaited ‘Waste to Energy’ mechanism by the end of the year through its Megapolis plan for the Western Province, the Central Environment Authority (CEA) revealed last week.
The ‘Waste to Energy’ mechanism had been in the pipeline for several years but was yet to get off ground due to several reasons.
Chairman, CEA, Prof. Lal Dharmasiri speaking to Nation stated that the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development was in the process of planning the project adding that it would be set up towards the end of this year.
“Several foreign investors have shown interest to be part of this project. The Government has selected a few of them and they would work on the planning and implementation process with the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development,” he said.
“Sri Lanka does not have a systematic and sustainable garbage disposal mechanism. However, this system will definitely be a suitable one for the country,” he added.
