This provincial union at present is under the presidency of Iswan Omar former Trinity, Kandy RFC, Kandy SC, UVA, Dimbulla and Up-Country forward.  The CPRFU is hoping to come out with a rugby academy which can help budding rugby players.

The CPRFU was established in 1992 and functions in accordance with the SLRFU’s guidelines and its constitution. At its peak, in 2002, when Iswan Omar was the Secretary, the CPRFU had under its purview clubs like Kandy SC, Dimbulla A & CC, Dickoya  CC, Peradeniya University, OTSC and Kandy Youth SC. At present except Kandy SC, all other clubs have given up playing rugby.

The CPRFU also embarked in forming ‘B’ division clubs. Some of these clubs were Katugastota Rugby Football Club, Polgolla Rugby Football Club, Mawilmada Rugby Football Club, Matale Rugby Football Club, Nuwra Eliya Rugby Football Club and Pilimatalawa Rugby Football Club. By 2008, CPRFU had 18 clubs playing in the up-country rugby league.

There were 52 schools in the Central Province engaged in rugby apart from traditional rugby playing schools like, Trinity, Kingswood, St. Anthony’s, Dharmaraja and Vidyartha.
