Academics called on the Government to conduct a national inquiry, seeking public consensus prior to formulating a National Action Plan for Human Rights from 2017 to 2021.

The Cabinet earlier approved the appointment of an inter-ministerial committee to formulate a National Action Plan for Human Rights for the five year period commencing next year.

Senior Lecturer at the Department of Commercial Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo, Attorney-at-Law Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa said that obtaining public consensus was important and added such a process would only take a period of six months.

“Although the Government’s inter-ministerial committee comprised of Ministers to formulate an Action Plan for Human Rights is to consider all the facts in relation to human rights,” he explained.
