At one time Kingswood College proved to be one of the most promising outfits among the rugby playing schools. This school’s forte has always been rugby. With the facilities that Kingswood enjoys it’s high time they produced one more champion team and add that feat to their rugby history.
They were the first school to play rugby in Sri Lanka. This academic institute was then known as Kandy Boys High School. That was way back in 1891. Their first inter-school rugby match was against Trinity, in 1906. The following year they gave up the game and didn’t reintroduce the sport till the 1970s.
Wherever Kingswood plays, its players have exhibited the skills needed for rugby union. If one goes down memory lane in the annals of Kingwood rugby, an interesting statistic dots its rugby records. In 1981 they emerged B Division champions under coach Z.M. Zarook. That year they won the Tyrell Muttiah Trophy and were promoted to A Division. Nineteen eighty-eight (1988) marks one of the finest years in the school’s rugby. Under the captaincy of Malik Weerasinghe they won nine matches out of eleven.
Sad to say this time they have lost all their fixtures. They were handed defeats against St. Peter’s (18-35), Dharmaraja (24-17), Isipathana (54-5), Science (53-5) and St. Anthony’s (23-22). This season’s fixture card marks an all important clash which is against Wesley played for the L.E. Blaze Trophy. The L.E. Blaze Trophy was presented by Old Kingswoodian Roy de Silva.
This season they are led by center three quarter S.R. Udagalahitiyawa. Kingswood is coached by Chamara Vithanage. The master-in-charge is Ruben Wijewardene.
