Cracked heels also known as heel fissures are a common problem for people of all ages. They are not just cosmetic. Cracked heels can be extremely painful. It may be accompanied by flaky patches, redness, itching, inflammation and peeling of skin. Causes of cracked heels can range from wearing the wrong types of shoes to unhealthy diet. Dryness, improper foot care, aging and prolonged standing on hard floors can also cause cracked heels.
Olive oil, sesame oil, coconut oil or any other hydrogenated vegetable oil can help soothe cracked heels. First soak feet in soapy water and scrub with a pumice stone. Wash feet and dry them thoroughly. Apply any oil liberally on heels and soles. Put on a pair of clean socks and leave them on overnight. By morning your heels will be softer. This has to be repeated for best results.
Sesame oil is very nourishing and moisturizing. It helps soften and soothe dry and cracked feet efficiently. Apply sesame oil on cracked heels. Massage well till it is absorbed by the skin. Do this daily before going to bed.
Banana-Avocado foot mask
Essential oils, vitamins and fats in Avocados help repair dry skin. Banana works as a moisturizer and softens skin. Blend a ripe banana and half an avocado. Apply the paste on cracked heels and feet. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water. This can even be done every day.
Glycerin works as a great remedy for cracked heels due to its moisturizing and humectant properties. Make equal parts of glycerin and lemon juice. Add rosewater if preferred. Apply it on feet. Leave on for 20 minutes and wash off. Continue once a day for two weeks.
Oatmeal’s anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties help remove dead skin cells and soften skin. Mix one tablespoon of powdered oatmeal and olive oil to make a paste. Apply on feet, especially over cracked heel. Leave on for about half an hour. Rinse off with cold water and pat dry. This can be done every alternate day till you are rid of cracked heels.
Honey is a natural antiseptic that helps soothe cracked heels, and its healing properties help revitalize skin. Mix one cup of honey in half a bucket of warm water. Soak feet for 15 to 20 minutes. Scrub off gently. This will leave your feet feeling soft and supple. This can be done on a regular basis.
Wax-Mustard oil treatment
An ointment type mixture using wax and mustard oil can be applied to heal your heels. You can use wax from a normal candle. But take care to use a white candle since colour may aggrevate the problem. This remedy’s best done before going to sleep.
Heat ½ to 1 cup of mustard oil in a pan. Add two tablespoons of wax and stir continuously till the wax melts. Stir until you reach a gel-like consistency that can be applied on feet. Let it cool down slightly. When the mixture gets lukewarm, apply it on the cracks. Put on socks to prevent staining your sheets. You may like to do it at night before you go to sleep for better results. Do this seven to 10 days till your heels are healed.
Avoid using very hot water, which can lead to over drying. Then scrub cracked heels using a pumice stone. Wash feet and pat dry with a towel.
