The civil society called for the Government to call off the proposed increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT) to 15% and to implement the Capital Gains Tax instead.
The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) and the Purawesi Balaya (PB) also called on the State to take into custody and freeze the assets of those who had engaged in the waste of monies, fraud and corruption during the regime of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

“When VAT is increased it affects the common folk because mobile phone and communication bills and private health care costs increase,” he mentioned. (RLJ)
