The Cabinet has approved a proposal made by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mangala Samaraweera to appoint an inter-ministerial committee-cum-task force to formulate a National Action Plan for Human Rights for the period of 2017 to 2021.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mahishini Colonne said that the committee-cum-task force would most probably be co-chaired by Samaraweera, Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, Malik Samarawickrama and Minister of Justice, Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

The previous five-year National Action Plan for Human Rights which has been implemented since 2012 expires this year.

The Government committee is to consider all the facts in relation to human rights in preparation for the drafting of the new National Action Plan for Human Rights.

When queried as to whether any specific aspects regarding human rights were being considered by the said committee, she explained that nothing could be pre-judged as a process would be put in place and as such a plan would evolve out of it.
