Public interest and civil liberty organization, Decent Lanka 2015 has written to the Chairman of the Constitutional Council, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya criticizing arbitrary selections, recommendations and appointments made to high positions by the Constitutional Council.

Convener of Decent Lanka 2015, Attorney-at-Law Neville Ananda said that the Constitutional Council had made no effort with regards to formulating a set procedure to provide for transparency and accountability in its decision making processes.He highlighted that in certain cases the so called civil society members of the Constitutional Council, three as per the provisions governing the composition and constituency of the Constitutional Council, had not been present at the time appointments to posts which required a high degree of independence were made.

“We are not against persons or personalities. We challenge the procedure adopted in the case of the appointment of the Attorney General and the Inspector General of Police (IGP),” he said.

He said that during the process of appointing the incumbent IGP, two of the three so called civil society members were abroad and only one was present. “We have not received any replies from Speaker Karu Jayasuriya with regards to any previous queries made by us,” he noted.
