The Government is to commence fresh talks with the Chinese Government to ensure smooth functioning of the controversial Norochcholai Lak Vijaya power plant.

The talks have been initiated by the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy following several breakdowns of the power plant which had resulted in frequent blackouts islandwide in the recent past.

Accordingly, a directive has been issued by Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya to the Ministry Secretary to commence talks with the Chinese Ambassador in Sri Lanka over the issue.

Apart from looking at receiving technical assistance from China, the Ministry has also drafted some in-house plans to keep the plant functioning with no break-downs in future.
Accordingly, the ministry has also decided to appoint an Additional General Manager to manage the activities of the power station. ‘The new General Manager and his team will be given powers to take decisions on short term projects and during emergency situations,’ the Minister said.
