St. Peter’s College hopes to regain some of their lost pride and clinch the Singer League Rugby Championship this season. This might not be a target a distance away for them given that they have a combination of young and talented players.
The Peterites are captained by experienced fly half Sandesh Jayawickrama who will play in the pivotal position as full back. His deputy will be another experienced player cum scrum half Avishka Heenpalla.
Their main objective is to regain the Singer League Rugby crown which they won last time under the captaincy of Keith Gurusinghe. Last year they claimed six mammoth victories which came against, Trinity College, C.W.W.Kannangara Vidyalalaya, Kingswood College, Dharmaraja, Wesley and St. Anthony’s under the captaincy of Kevin “Kutty” Dixon. However, they were defeated by S.Thomas’ and Science College on their home grounds. They also lost to St. Josephs.
The Peterites failed to maintain stability after losing to Isipathana and the defending champions Royal. However they managed to boost their morale a bit when they swamped C.W.W.Kannangara Vidyalaya with a score of over 100 points.
The St. Peter’s squad has retained the services of several senior players including skipper Jayawickrama, Avishka Heenpalla, Diyath Fernando, who is another talented player in the team and is the first choice among the centres, lock forwards Rahal Delpachithra and Maleesha Rajapaksha along with the prop forward Ravin Yapa.
This year the Peterites won their first match convincingly beating Kingswood 35-18, but suffered an unexpected 13-10 loss against Science College Mt. Lavinia last week.
Colin Denish, a former Peterite rugby captain and ex-deputy coach, has taken over the responsibility of building up of the team. He is confident that the boys will perform better and their feats will be spoken of this season.
The team gets the full support of Rector Fr.Trevor Martin, Sports Coordinator Fr.Thilina Pathum, Master-In-Charge Sunil Aponso, Assistant Coaches Rajiv Perera and Mohamad Sheriff, Manager Mahesh De Silva along with Fitness Trainer Ransilu Jayathilaka.
