A spectacular last minute try by winger Henakankanamalage Naveen helped S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia stun Royal College and record a 21 points (3tries , 3conversion) To 15 (2tries, 1conversion, 1penalty) win in the Michael Gunaratne Trophy rugby match at Royal Sports Complex on April 9.

The Thomians were trailing 7-10 at half time.

For S. Thomas’ College, winger H.K.Naveen (Two) and open side flanker Vishaka Rathnayaka (One) scored the tries while centre Ashwantha Herath put over three conversions.

Captain and number eight Nikila Gunadheera and hooker H.Reeza scored one try apiece for Royal while full back Ovin Askey booted over one conversion and a penalty.

Speaking to Nation Thomian coach Tavita Tulagaese ” Laga” said, “It was sheer hard work, commitment and dedication and I’m really proud of the whole team as the boys played their hearts out as they never gave it up till the very last minute. It was a remarkable achievement by the boys. Cheers to all”.

In some of the other matches played on April 9, in Nittawela the galant Peterites came from behind to beat St. Anthony’s College Kandy by 21 points (3 Tries , 3 Conversion) to 11 ( 1 Try, 2 Penalties) at Nittawela. At half time Peters were trailing 7-11.

Science College Mt. Lavinia beat Dharmaraja College kandy by 54 points to 7 at Air Force grounds in Ratmalana. The Highlight of the match was nippy Science scrum half Hashan Madumadawa and Udesh Madusanka scoring a hat-trick of tries each.
