Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) criticized the move by the Government to provide MPs with an extra vehicle in addition to the vehicle given on the permits afforded to the Parliamentarians as an attempt to appease Government MPs.
JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that such a move at a time when the country was experiencing a crisis and the national economy was in dire straits was unfair as it would place further financial burden on the people. It is reported that the Cabinet has approved the said proposal submitted by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Minister Gayantha Karunathilake is reported as having stated that the extra vehicle would be given for use by the MPs for engagement with development projects of the Government and that the maintenance expenditure of the said vehicles would have to be borne by the MPs.
The Government whilst increasing the tax burden placed upon the public is one by one attempting to obtain and gain privileges to the Parliament, and especially for the MPs in the Government, he added. (RLJ)
