Ven. Ulapone Sumangala Thera and members of civil society come out of the CID HQ after lodging complaint

Civil society organizations lodged a complaint at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on March 24, demanding an investigation into statements made by MP UdayaGammanpila and Chief Incumbent of the Alan Mathiniyaramaya, Ven. Uduwe DhammalokaThera that Convener of the National Movement for Social Justice, Ven. Maduluwawe SobithaThera’s death was a planned murder.

They urged the President and the Prime Minister to intervene to ensure a fair and proper investigation and asked the Inspector General of Police and the CID to investigate the matter urgently.

Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Front, Ven. Ulapane SumangalaThera said that Buddhists, non Buddhists and everyone in the country were shocked and distressed by the said statements.

‘It has been five months since Sobitha Thera’s passing away and this group involving Uduwe DhammalokaThera and several other monks and Gammanpila were silent.

“On what basis has Gammanpila made this statement? DhammalokaThera recently had a stint in prison for a fraud involving an elephant, for the theft of an elephant. The people need to know the truth behind these statements. It was not the present Government led by the President and the Prime Minister that ever wanted Sobitha Thera’s death but the previous Government. During the movement to free Field Marshall (then General) Sarath Fonseka, it was the past Government that caused an accident involving a vehicle in which SobithaThera was travelling in at the time and attempted to kill him. I was the other person in the vehicle’,the Tera noted.

Attorney-at-Law representing Sumangala Thera in the matter, Lakshan J.S. Dias noted that both Dhammaloka Thera and Gammanpila had committed an offence as per Section 208 of the Penal Code pertaining to a false charge of offence made with intent to injure.
