The Police and the State Intelligence on Friday (11) deployed special teams to probe the suspicious deaths of five individuals whose charred bodies were found in a burned van in a secluded byroad in Dankotuwa early March 10.

Secretary of Defence, Karunasena Hettiarachchi said that the intelligence services were looking into the matter too. Meanwhile, Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order, Jagath Wijeweera also said that they were yet to receive detailed information pertaining to the incident and added that any special measures in the future would depend on the information received.

At the time of print, Police were yet to make a breakthrough on investigations into the

Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon has handed over the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department.

The bodies of the deceased are reported to be burned beyond recognition. Bloodstains were reported to be found on the road area near the gutted vehicle. The Police have recovered a number plate (reported to be WP PH 1080 and reported to be owned by Kaluthota Finance) on the ground from near the destroyed vehicle, it is reported. The van is reported to have been registered to an individual in Kollupitiya. The driver (reported to be one Kapila) is said to be a resident of Pannala. While the driver’s wife has reportedly identified the vehicle she has however not been able to identify her husband’s body from among the other four.

Police Media Spokesman, ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said the Police were awaiting the results of the post-mortem examinations.
