The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) filed a fundamental rights petition demanding that the Government enforce the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) Act, No. 14 of 1971, to certify and guarantee the purchase price of paddy and rice.
Three trade unions including the All Ceylon Peasants Federation (ACPF) form the plaint while the PMB and the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) have been named as the respondents to the case.
JVP North Western Provincial Councilor and the National Organizer of the ACPF, Namal Karunaratne said that the price of paddy was dropping while the price of rice was increasing.
One of the objectives, aims and goals of the PMB is to bring forth a trade mechanism satisfactory to the producers (in this case the farmers) and consumers, he added.
Section 7 of the said Act is regarding the authorized purchaser having to pay the guaranteed price for the purchase of paddy.
