Football in Jaffna reaching a high standard has been underscored by of St. Henry’s College Jaffna clinching the Kotmale Under-19 Schools Football crown.  The Jaffna lads defeated Zahira College Colombo by three goals to one in the final played at Race Course Ground on February 19.

To beat a leading soccer playing school like Zahira College is a great achievement considering the history of the game at Zahira. The final result was an emphatic win for the lads from the north who have been starved of sports activities for a long time.
The scores stood level 1-1 at half time.

St. Henry’s obtained their first goal in the 41st minute through an own goal but Zahira found the equalizer in the last minute through M.F. Faroodh.

St. Henry’s got ahead through a goal by G. Antonyraj in the 67th minute and another goal by A.B. Anojan in the 73rd minute to seal victory.

A.B. Anojan of St. Henry’s was adjudged as the best player of the match while team mate U. Amalraj was the best goal keeper.
Holy Cross College (Kalutara) finished in third place when they beat St. Sebastian College Katuneriya by a solitary goal to nil.
The goal was scored by T.A. Asela Madushan in the 69th minute. (TBR)
