Thirteen prisoners are presently engaged in a hunger strike at the Welikada Prison, demanding that the authorities take action to expedite their cases, the Department of Prisons informed.

Commissioner of Prisons (Operations/Intelligence and Security), H.M.T.N. Upuldeniya said that 63 inmates who on February 29 had joined the hunger strike in a show of solidarity to the 13 who had started the hunger strike, had since started consuming meals again.

These prisoners were ones who were taken in under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
