The 82nd ‘Battle of the Saints’ annual cricket annual encounter between St. Joseph’s College Maradana and St. Peters’s College Bambalapitiya will take place on March 4 and 5 at The Sara Oval in Colombo. Details of the big match were announced to the media at a press conference held at Sports Ministry Auditorium on 25 February.
‘Battle of the Saints’ is one of the oldest traditional cricket encounters played between these two Catholic schools in the country. The match is played for the Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc Challenge Trophy.
The chief guest at the match will be Berchman De Alwis, who was the Josephian captain in 1964.
The new logo designed for the match was unveiled at the press conference. The big match is organized for the first time by a joint committee. This year Dialog has come forward as the main sponsor of this annual cricket fixture.
The 50 overs per side match between the two schools will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium on March 12.
St. Joseph’s College leads the series tally with 12 wins with their last win coming under the leadership of Ruwantha Fernandopulle in 2008. St. Peter’s College last registered a win under Shehan Fernando’s captaincy in 2012. Petes have won the ‘Battle of the Saints’ on 9 occasions while Joes have 12 wins under their belt. Sixty (60) matches ended in no result.
This year the Peterites are led by Vinu Mohotty and the side is coached by Malinda Warnapura.
Joes will be captained by Sadaruwan Rodrigo. The lads from Maradana are coached by Asela Pathirana.
