The Nawa Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) called on the Government to grant bail to political prisoners held in Boossa, Anuradhapura and Kegalle, including Leader of the Frontline Socialist Party, Kumar Gunaratnam.
Of the political prisoners, four are held in Boossa and two are kept in Anuradhapura while Gunaratnam is in custody in Kegalle, Leader of the NSSP, Dr. Wickremabahu Karunaratne said.
He added that the present regime should explain their position as the current situation concerning political prisoners, which included persons taken under the Prevention of Terrorism Act from both the Sinhalese and Tamil communities, was a tragic one, unbeneficial to the human rights conscious Government and bringing ill fame to them.
Gunaratnam was arrested for violating the provisions of the Immigrants and Emigrants Act.
“Their so called crimes were due to actions committed as part of political organizations. They have been held for long periods sans relief. They are kept under heavy guard. The previous Government released a large number of political prisoners including an acting leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam who was subsequently given a top position. Those who are incarcerated at present are with the exception of Gunaratnam, of the rank and file. Their applications for bail have also been rejected,” he observed.
