The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is presently engaged in rallying farmers island-wide to conduct a protest cum march to Colombo with the intention of blocking all (six) main entry roads to Colombo.

JVP North Western Provincial Councilor and the National Organizer of the All Ceylon Peasants Federation, Namal Karunaratne said that although the last time the farmers came to Colombo, they had managed to surround the Temple Trees, the Government had still not felt the plight nor heeded the voice of the farmers.

The Government has continued to curtail the rights of the farmers and on February 24, 5,000 farmers will conduct a protest in Medirigiriya over the cutting off of the fertilizer subsidy, he explained.

“We have conducted 30 summits with the farmers and 20 kamath (threshing floor) sabhas. Blocking entry to Colombo will make the Government feel the heat. The Government is meting out step-motherly treatment to the farmers. The date for the protest has not been decided on yet,” he added.
