The Road Development Authority (RDA) will commence work on the third section of the Central Expressway (formerly known as the Colombo-Kandy Road), which concerns the stretch between Pothuhera and Galagedara, by mid this year.

Director General of the RDA, M. Pushpa K.L. Gunaratne said the RDA was continuing with its usual programmes in the Northern Province.

The Central Expressway is divided into four stages, with the first stage from Kadawatha to Mirigama, second stage from Meerigama to Kurunegala, the third stage from Pothuhera to Galagedara and also with the fourth and final stage, he added.

He explained that the funding for the first stage was from China, second stage was from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) while the funding for the third stage was from local banks.

“By the mid of 2016, we will commence work on the third section. With regard to the other sections, we are currently engaged and proceeding with land acquisition. Elsewhere, in the North, the construction of certain roads is taking place with ADB funds while local funds are being used to improve other roads in the North. In the future, we plan to seek more foreign funding,” he asserted.
