Melanin is the pigment that is responsible for giving the skin, eye, and hair its colour. It also offers protection to the skin, from damage by the harmful ultraviolet light present in the sun rays, as part of the essential protection mechanisms of your body. Therefore, more the exposure to the sun, more the melanin production in your skin. However, to the misery of most of us, the presence of excessive levels of melanin, results in a darker complexion. Sometimes this also results in excessive colouration or loss of colouration of skin, in patches and spots, a condition known as pigmentation.
Sri Lanka being geographically located close to the equator, is blessed with an abundance of sunlight all year round, result being each time you return from, say, from grocery shopping, you end up a little bit darker than when you started out. Luckily, there are ways of controlling melanin, by using herbal remedies. This way you could remove your sun burns or tan and pigmentation and ensure your skin is protected from ultraviolet rays, at the same time.
However, keep in mind that
excessive melanin production could be caused by a medical condition. Therefore it is best to consult a doctor if your skin produces
excessive melanin for a prolonged period of time.
