The Judicial Medical Officer (JMO)’s report into the alleged murder of a youth in Embilipitiya at a party recently has confirmed that severe injuries to the body including cut injuries to internal organs, and the resultant severe, excessive internal bleeding combined with shock and trauma, was the cause of death.
Following a clash with the Police in Embilipitiya during a celebration at a residence in the area, Sumith Prasanna Jayawardena, a resident of Embilipitiya, who is a father of one, and whose wife is expecting, died after falling from the top floor of a building.
Attorney-at-Law Udul Premaratne said that Embilipitiya Additional Magistrate, Prasanna Fernando had informed the Court of the cause of death following the conclusion of the post-mortem examination.
The Magistrate had instructed the Criminal Investigations Department to conduct investigations accordingly, and to arrest the suspects and produce them before the Court.
Whether Jayawardena was murdered is yet to be known. Ratnapura District JMO, K.M.T.B. Gunathilake gave evidence in Court after filing the JMO report with the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court.
The former Assistant Superintendent of Police of Embilipitiya, D.W.C. Dharmaratne is presently in remand custody over suspicion of involvement in the death. The deceased’s wife testified that her husband had been pushed and therefore had been killed.
